A covered electrode supplies the metal and protects the weld pool while it solidifies. The choice of coating determines ease of use and the metallurgical quality of the bead, and these two criteria pull in opposite directions.

Rutile or basic
A rutile electrode strikes easily, produces a stable arc and an even-looking bead, and its slag comes off effortlessly. It suits common steels and repairs.
A basic electrode gives a tougher deposited metal and above all one much less prone to cold cracking, because its coating brings very little hydrogen. It is the choice for thick, restrained or heavily loaded joints. It is more demanding to strike.
Storage determines the performance of a basic electrode
A basic electrode that has absorbed moisture loses precisely the advantage it was chosen for: its coating brings hydrogen back into the pool, and the cracking risk returns.
This requires dry storage and, for demanding work, a drying oven. An opened pack left on the bench in an unheated workshop no longer offers the guarantees of its classification.
