Auto-darkening helmets use a liquid crystal filter (ADF) that detects arc ignition through sensors and darkens the visor instantly, switching from a light resting shade (around DIN 3-4) to an adjustable welding shade, typically between 5 and 13 depending on the process and the current used. The welder can therefore keep the helmet down continuously, with no manual gesture between passes, which improves comfort, posture and productivity. The technology suits every process (MMA, MIG-MAG, TIG, grinding) and comes at different performance levels: switching speed, optical class, number of sensors, solar or battery power. Some models also combine welding and grinding modes, or can be paired with a powered air supply system for added respiratory comfort.
