PTFE, polyimide and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene share a rare property: nothing sticks to them, and they withstand conditions that destroy other plastics. These tapes are therefore used where a non-stick surface is needed.
The 3 references in the catalogue
- 3M 5490, single-sided Teflon PTFE tape.
- 3M 92, polyimide film tape.
- 3M 5423, UHMW polyethylene tape.

Three materials, three uses
PTFE offers the lowest coefficient of friction and high temperature resistance. It is used to cover the sealing bars of packaging machines, guide rails and anything that must slide without sticking, including when hot.
Polyimide withstands very high temperatures while staying very thin. It is the electronics masking tape, notably during wave soldering, where it protects the areas not to be soldered.
UHMW polyethylene is the champion of abrasion resistance. It protects friction and sliding areas, and dampens noisy contact.
What they share, and the constraint
These materials are non-stick, which makes their own back face hard to coat with adhesive. Manufacturers treat it, but application requires a perfectly clean surface and real pressing down.
And by definition, nothing will hold on the working face: no paint, no marking, no other adhesive. That is precisely what is asked of them.
