A flap disc on its own replaces both the grinding disc and the sanding disc. Its abrasive flaps, arranged in a fan, wear away layer after layer: the disc does not dull, it renews itself, and works from roughing to finishing without changing tools.

Flat or conical, a question of angle
A flat disc, PFF type, works flat or very slightly tilted. It suits flat surfaces and finish sanding, where tilting would create a hollow.
A conical disc, PFC type, is designed to work tilted, between about fifteen and twenty-five degrees. It gives better output on weld beads, edges and corners.
Using a flat disc tilted wears its edge in seconds. Using a conical disc flat only loads the periphery.
Fibre or plastic backing
The backing does not change the abrasive but changes how the disc ends its life.
Fibre is rigid and economical and takes the load on sustained work, but it must be removed from the hub before disposal.
Plastic wears down together with the flaps: the disc is used up entirely and leaves no hard edge that would mark the part at the end of its life. It can also be trimmed with a knife if needed.
Flap disc or fibre disc
The fibre disc removes more material, faster, but leaves a rough surface that will need reworking.
The flap disc removes less but leaves a directly usable surface. On weld rework where appearance matters, it saves a whole pass.
The calculation is made in total time, not in removal rate. See our fibre discs.
