Passive welding helmets use a fixed-shade lens (usually DIN 10) that provides constant protection against the UV and IR radiation emitted by the arc. Robust and straightforward to use, they suit welding processes with a stable current (MMA, MIG-MAG) where the amperage varies little from one pass to the next. The welder has to lift the visor to check the work between passes, which makes them an economical solution but a slower one than an auto-darkening helmet. Some models have a flip-front lens that makes switching between welding and grinding easier. Their light weight and adjustable headgear make them a popular choice for everyday workshop use, in particular for occasional welders and trainees.
