A fibre disc must always be mounted on a backing pad, never directly on the guard side. The pad gives it its working rigidity and spreads the force over the whole surface.
The reference in the catalogue
The 3M ribbed rigid backing pad.

Why a domed pad
The face of the pad is not flat but slightly convex. This curve makes the disc bear on its periphery, at the natural working angle of fifteen to twenty-five degrees, instead of flattening it.
The disc therefore cuts with its most effective zone, heats less and wears evenly. A flat pad would make the centre work, which hardly cuts at all.
It is a safety part
A worn or warped pad, or one smaller in diameter than the disc, leaves the edge of the disc working unsupported. It then tears apart in use.
The pad must extend a few millimetres beyond the working edge of the disc and be replaced as soon as it hollows or its edges get damaged. It is not a part to make last.
