Overview of Tesa 4965: a high-performance double-sided tape
The Tesa 4965 is a double-sided adhesive tape with a transparent PET film backing, designed for demanding permanent assemblies. It offers mechanical and thermal resistance far superior to traditional double-sided foam or fabric tapes.
At Dagobert Industrie, we recommend it for all bonding applications where dimensional precision and stress resistance are top priorities.
Product composition and structure
Tesa 4965 is based on a three-layer structure:
- A biaxially oriented polyester (PET) film as a central backing, thin, rigid, and non-deformable
- A high-performance acrylic mass on each side, with immediate and permanent adhesion
- A transparent silicone liner to facilitate application and precise positioning
The PET backing guarantees high tensile strength and very low elongation. The tape does not stretch or deform under load.
The acrylic adhesive develops strong adhesion on smooth surfaces: glass, metal, and rigid plastics (ABS, polycarbonate, acrylic). It is resistant to UV and aging, ensuring the durability of the assembly over time.
With a total thickness of approximately 0.15 mm, Tesa 4965 is one of the thinnest double-sided tapes on the market for this level of performance, a decisive advantage in invisible joint assemblies.
Technical and adhesive properties of Tesa 4965
The Tesa 4965 is a double-sided adhesive tape with a transparent PET film backing. This thin, non-deformable backing gives it excellent mechanical resistance and very good dimensional stability, even under stress.
Both sides are coated with a high-performance acrylic adhesive. This type of adhesive develops progressive adhesion over time, with a high final peel strength on many substrates: metals, plastics, glass, and painted surfaces.
Tesa 4965 is distinguished by its temperature resistance ranging from −40 °C to +150 °C in permanent use, with higher tolerable peaks for short durations. It is also resistant to UV, humidity, and most common solvents.
Its transparent PET backing makes it virtually invisible after application, which makes it a preferred choice for assemblies where aesthetics matter.
| Product | Backing | Adhesive | Max Temp. | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesa 4965 | Transparent PET film | High-perf. acrylic | +150 °C | Industrial assembly, smooth surfaces |
| Tesa 4970 | White PET film | High-perf. acrylic | +150 °C | Industrial assembly, opaque surfaces |
| Tesa 4959 | Non-woven | Standard acrylic | +80 °C | Light fastening, stationery |
| 3M 9472LE | Transparent PET film | Optical acrylic | +149 °C | Optical assembly, electronics |
With a total thickness of approximately 100 µm, Tesa 4965 offers a very thin profile that does not create a visible ridge on neat assemblies. This is a major asset for display or signage applications.
Applications and fields of use for Tesa 4965
The Tesa 4965 is a high-performance PET film backed double-sided tape. It is designed for permanent assemblies on smooth surfaces where foam tape would be too thick or too soft.
Its ultra-thin PET film gives it excellent tensile strength and good dimensional stability. It does not deform under load, even in demanding technical applications.
Here are the main areas where it excels:
- Electronics and electrical engineering: fixing components, PCBs, screens
- Automotive industry: bonding emblems, trims, and decorative parts
- Signage and printing: mounting plates, cut-out letters, panels
- Graphic industry: cliché mounting and film fixing
- Precision assembly: metal/plastic or glass/metal bonding
Compatible surfaces and materials
Tesa 4965 adheres effectively to a wide range of smooth, non-porous surfaces. Results are optimal on surfaces that are clean, degreased, and free of dust.
Compatible materials:
- Metals: steel, aluminum, stainless steel
- Rigid plastics: ABS, PC, rigid PVC, PMMA
- Glass and vitrified surfaces
- Painted surfaces with high surface energy
Conversely, it is poorly suited to porous or low surface energy surfaces like untreated polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). For these substrates, tapes with silicone adhesive or primer are preferable.
Comparative: Tesa 4965 versus other PET double-sided tapes on the market
The Tesa 4965 stands out for its ultra-thin PET film backing and high-performance acrylic glue. But how does it position itself against the competition?
Here is a direct comparison with the most common market references.
| Product | Manufacturer | Backing | Glue | Thickness | Thermal resistance | Typical usage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesa 4965 | Tesa | PET film | Acrylic | ~0.05 mm | up to 150 °C | Precision assembly, electronics, smooth surfaces |
| Tesa 4964 | Tesa | PET film | Acrylic (less aggressive) | ~0.05 mm | up to 120 °C | Light applications, paper, cardboard |
| 3M 9671LE | 3M | PET film | Optically clear acrylic | ~0.05 mm | up to 150 °C | Optics, display, transparent surfaces |
| 3M 9495LE | 3M | PET film | 300LSE Acrylic | ~0.06 mm | up to 149 °C | Low surface energy surfaces, plastics |
| Nitto 5000NS | Nitto | PET film | Acrylic | ~0.05 mm | up to 130 °C | General industrial assembly |
Tesa 4965 offers a good balance between high adhesion, thermal resistance, and the thinness of the backing. It is particularly suitable for smooth and rigid surfaces.
3M 9495LE is preferable on low surface energy plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene). 3M 9671LE is essential for transparent optical applications.
Tesa 4964, a sibling to the 4965, is suitable for less demanding assemblies where maximum adhesive strength is not required.
For standard industrial applications requiring precision and reliability, Tesa 4965 remains a safe bet that we recommend at Dagobert Industrie.
Application tips and best practices to optimize adhesion
The Tesa 4965 offers excellent performance, but careful application makes all the difference. A few simple rules allow you to take full advantage of its adhesive capacity.
Prepare the surfaces above all. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and degreased. A simple wipe with isopropanol is sufficient in most cases.
Avoid applying the tape to dusty or oily surfaces. Adhesion would be compromised from the start, even with a high-performance PET film.
Ideal application temperature: between 15 °C and 35 °C. Below this, the acrylic adhesive reacts less well upon contact. If you are working in a cold environment, slightly heat the surface before application.
Press firmly along the entire length after application. Using a pressure roller guarantees intimate contact between the adhesive and the substrate, without bubbles or peeling zones.
Allow an anchoring time of 24 to 72 hours before subjecting the assembly to significant mechanical stress. The acrylic adhesive reaches its full cohesion gradually.
