Presentation of the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460 epoxy structural adhesive
The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460 is a two-part epoxy structural adhesive designed for high-performance assemblies. It offers exceptional mechanical strength on a wide range of materials.
At Dagobert Industrie, we offer it to professionals who need a durable, reliable bond that is resistant to severe stresses.
Composition and two-part epoxy technology
The DP460 is based on a two-part epoxy formulation: a resin and a hardener. Mixing is done directly via an application gun with a static mixing nozzle.
This system ensures a perfectly controlled resin/hardener ratio for every application. The result: a homogeneous bond with no dosage errors.
Once cured, the adhesive forms a rigid joint with:
- High shear strength (up to ~25 MPa on steel)
- Peel strength superior to standard epoxies
- Good resistance to shocks and vibrations
- Resistance to oils, solvents, and common chemicals
- Temperature resistance up to 120 °C continuous
The DP460 adheres to metals, composites, wood, ceramics, and most plastics. It is particularly suitable for multi-material assemblies.
Its 45-minute open time provides a comfortable margin for positioning parts before final setting.
Technical properties and mechanical performance of the DP460
The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460 is a two-part epoxy adhesive with high mechanical strength. It is distinguished by its high shear strength and excellent shock resistance.
Its shear strength on steel reaches approximately 25 to 35 MPa, depending on application conditions and substrates. This is one of the highest values in the Scotch-Weld range.
The DP460 also features peel strength superior to most rigid epoxies. This characteristic makes it suitable for assemblies subject to dynamic or vibrational stresses.
Its service temperature range extends from -55 °C to +120 °C. It retains its mechanical properties in demanding environments: humidity, fuels, and oils.
Key technical data:
- Mixing ratio: 2:1 (resin/hardener)

Compared to the DP420, the DP460 offers a better balance between rigidity and shock resistance. It is the preferred choice at Dagobert Industrie for structural assemblies on metals, composites, and engineering plastics.
Areas of application and compatible materials
The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460 two-part epoxy adhesive is designed for demanding structural assemblies. It is suitable for both industrial production and workshop repairs.
It excels in the following sectors:
- Aerospace industry: bonding composite panels, structural reinforcements
- Electronics and electrical engineering: fixing components, partial encapsulation
- Automotive and transport: assembly of structural parts, weld reinforcement
- Construction and civil engineering: fixing metal inserts, bonding dissimilar materials
- General industrial manufacturing: replacement or complement to screws and bolts
Recommended substrates and surface preparation
The DP460 adheres to a wide range of materials. This is one of its major strengths.Compatible materials:
- Metals: steel, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass
- Composites: carbon fiber (CFRP), fiberglass (GFRP)
- Rigid plastics: ABS, PC, PVC, epoxy
- Wood, ceramic, glass
Surface preparation is decisive for achieving maximum strength. Degreasing with isopropanol or acetone is recommended for metals. Light sanding significantly improves mechanical anchoring on smooth surfaces.
On low-surface-energy plastics (PE, PP, PTFE), plasma or corona treatment remains necessary, the DP460 does not adhere to them naturally without prior activation.
Comparison: 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460 versus other epoxy structural adhesives on the market
The market for epoxy structural adhesives is dense. To help clearly position the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460, here is a direct comparison with its main competitors.
| Product | Manufacturer | Shear strength | Work time | Flexibility | Strengths |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scotch-Weld™ DP460 | 3M | ~28 MPa | ~60 min | Rigid | High strength, long open time, multi-material |
| Scotch-Weld™ DP420 | 3M | ~24 MPa | ~20 min | Rigid | Faster set, good strength/cost ratio |
| Scotch-Weld™ DP490 | 3M | ~25 MPa | ~80 min | Semi-flexible | Better shock resistance, dynamic joints |
| Araldite® 2011 | Huntsman | ~18 MPa | ~100 min | Slightly flexible | Versatile, widely available, inexpensive |
| Loctite® EA 9466 | Henkel | ~22 MPa | ~60 min | Flexible | Good resistance to vibration and shock |
The DP460 is distinguished by having one of the highest shear strengths in its category, while offering a comfortable work time of about one hour.
Compared to the DP420 (in the same 3M range), the DP460 is better suited for complex assemblies that require positioning time. The DP420 remains relevant when speed is the priority.
Compared to Huntsman's Araldite® 2011, the DP460 displays significantly higher mechanical strength. The Araldite is suitable for less demanding applications.
Henkel's Loctite® EA 9466 is more flexible: it absorbs vibrations better. The DP460 is the right choice when rigidity and static load-bearing are the priorities.
At Dagobert Industrie, we recommend the DP460 for any demanding structural assembly where maximum mechanical strength is non-negotiable.
Implementation tips and conditions of use
The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP460 is a two-part epoxy adhesive. It is dispensed using an application gun adapted for dual-cartridges, with a static mixing nozzle.
Before any application, carefully degrease the surfaces to be assembled. Wiping with acetone or isopropanol is sufficient in most cases. On oxidized metals or difficult plastics, an adhesion primer may be necessary.
Observe the work time (pot life): approximately 25 to 35 minutes at 23 °C, depending on the quantity mixed. Beyond this, the product begins to polymerize and can no longer be positioned correctly.
Full mechanical strength is reached after 24 hours at room temperature. Heating to 60-80 °C for 30 to 60 minutes allows for faster polymerization and optimizes final performance.
A few points to respect for successful implementation:
- Recommended application temperature: between 15 °C and 35 °C
- Purge the first few centimeters of the mixture before application
- Keep assembled parts in position until initial set
- Avoid contact with moisture during polymerization
- Store the cartridge away from heat and humidity
At Dagobert Industrie, we recommend testing adhesion on a representative sample before any serial bonding, especially on plastic or composite substrates.

1. What is the difference between the DP460 and the DP420?
The DP460 is formulated to offer significantly higher peel and shock resistance than the DP420. It remains more flexible after polymerization, making it ideal for assemblies subject to vibrations or dynamic stresses.
The DP420 is more rigid and better suited for static assemblies requiring maximum shear strength.
2. On which materials can the DP460 be used?
The DP460 adheres to a very wide range of substrates: metals, composites, engineering plastics, wood, and ceramics.
It is particularly effective on difficult surfaces such as anodized aluminum or low-surface-energy plastics, provided the surface is well prepared beforehand.
3. What is the work time after mixing?
The DP460 exists in two versions: a standard version with a work time of approximately 60 minutes, and an Off-White version with slightly different characteristics depending on the ambient temperature.
The higher the temperature, the shorter the work time. Ideally, work between 18 °C and 25 °C for optimal results.
4. Is surface preparation required before application?
Yes, surface preparation is essential to achieve maximum performance. Systematically degrease with a suitable solvent and lightly abrade smooth surfaces.
On metals, an adhesion primer can further improve the bond, especially in humid or corrosive environments.
5. Does the DP460 resist severe environments?
Yes. Once polymerized, the DP460 supports temperatures up to 120 °C continuously, and resists common industrial fluids (oils, fuels, moderate solvents).
It is therefore suitable for aeronautical, automotive, and industrial applications exposed to demanding conditions.
