3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS Acrylic Adhesive, Black, 45 ml Duo-Pak: High-Performance Structural Adhesive

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS is a two-part structural acrylic adhesive designed for demanding assemblies. It bonds metals, composites, and plastics with high mechanical strength.

Its 45 ml Duo-Pak format ensures precise mixing of the two components with every use. Zero waste, zero guesswork.

The black tint guarantees discreet joints on dark or exposed assemblies. An aesthetic asset as much as a technical one.

Presentation of the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS Acrylic Adhesive

Low-odor two-part acrylic technology

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS is a two-part structural acrylic adhesive designed for demanding industrial assemblies. It comes in a 45 ml Duo-Pak cartridge, ready for use with an appropriate dispensing gun.

Its main advantage: an NS (No Smell) formulation, meaning it has a significantly reduced odor compared to traditional acrylics. Ideal for working in confined spaces or poorly ventilated workshops.

The resin/hardener mixture is created automatically via a static mixing nozzle. The ratio is respected with every application, without any dosage errors.

The adhesive is colored black, which allows for hiding joints on dark substrates and obtaining a clean finish on black or dark parts.

It adheres to a wide range of materials without complex surface preparation:

  • Metals: steel, aluminum, galvanized steel
  • Plastics: ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, polyester GRP
  • Composites and painted materials

The resulting assemblies withstand high mechanical stresses: tension, shear, and vibrations. The DP8705NS is suitable for applications in industry, automotive bodywork, electronics, and construction.

Product Technology Odor Color Work time Main usage
3M™ DP8705NS Two-part acrylic Low (NS) Black ~4 min Multi-material structural assembly
3M™ DP8010 Two-part acrylic Standard Translucent ~8 min Plastics and composites
3M™ DP490 Two-part epoxy Low Gray ~20 min High thermal resistance assembly
Loctite EA 3430 Two-part acrylic Standard Translucent ~15 min Metals and rigid plastics

Technical properties and characteristics of the DP8705NS

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS is a two-part acrylic adhesive with dynamic mixing. It comes in a 45 ml Duo-Pak cartridge, with a 1:1 mix ratio.

Its black color after polymerization allows for a discreet finish on dark assemblies. The NS (No Sag) indication means that the adhesive does not run on vertical or inclined surfaces.

The work time is approximately 4 to 5 minutes at 23 °C. Full mechanical strength is reached in 24 hours.

This product develops excellent performance in shear strength and peel strength. It is suitable for metallic substrates, composites, rigid plastics, and porous materials.

Key characteristics:

  • Technology: two-part acrylic (base + hardener)
  • Mixing ratio: 1:1
  • Work time: ~4-5 min at 23 °C
  • Color after polymerization: black
  • Rheological behavior: thixotropic (No Sag)
  • Compatible substrates: metals, composites, plastics, wood

Product Technology Work time Color No Sag Typical usage
3M™ DP8705NS Acrylic 1:1 ~4-5 min Black ✔ Multi-material structural assemblies
3M™ DP8710NS Acrylic 1:1 ~8-10 min Black ✔ Assemblies requiring more positioning time
3M™ DP490 Epoxy 2:1 ~20 min Translucent ✘ High thermal resistance assemblies
Loctite EA 9466 Epoxy 1:1 ~60 min Gray ✘ Heavy-duty aeronautical and industrial structures

Applications and materials compatible with the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS is a two-part acrylic adhesive designed to bond materials that are difficult to join by welding or screwing. It excels on low surface energy substrates, where most structural adhesives fail.

It adheres without a primer on a wide range of materials:

  • Engineering plastics: ABS, polycarbonate, PVC, nylon, polyester
  • Metals: steel, aluminum, stainless steel
  • Composites and fiberglass
  • Painted or coated materials
  • Wood, ceramic, concrete

Industrial sectors and typical uses

At Dagobert Industrie, we supply this product to clients from various sectors who all have one thing in common: assemblies subjected to high mechanical stress.

Concrete uses:

  • Automotive: fastening of bodywork parts, interior trims, plastic supports
  • Electronics industry: bonding of housings, fastening of components
  • Construction and signage: assembly of composite panels, signs
  • Sports equipment: repair and assembly of lightweight structures

The solvent-free (NS) formulation makes it compatible with VOC-sensitive environments. The black tint allows for a discreet finish on visible assemblies.

Comparison: DP8705NS against other structural acrylic adhesives

The market for structural acrylic adhesives is dense. To choose the right product, one must compare key characteristics: work time, mechanical strength, and material compatibility.

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS distinguishes itself with its non-sagging (NS) formulation, ideal for bonding on vertical surfaces. The adhesive stays in place without running before polymerization.

Product Manufacturer Work time Tensile strength Non-sagging Color
DP8705NS 3M ~5 min Very high ✔ Black
DP8010NS 3M ~10 min High ✔ Translucent
Araldite 2011 Huntsman ~100 min High ✗ Beige
Plexus MA310 ITW ~10 min Very high ✗ Off-white

Compared to Araldite 2011 (two-part epoxy), the DP8705NS offers a much shorter set time and better performance on plastic materials without extensive surface preparation.

Compared to Plexus MA310 from ITW, the DP8705NS has the advantage of the non-sagging formulation, which is more practical in workshops for complex or inclined parts.

Within the 3M range, the DP8010NS is more suitable when the work time needs to be extended. The DP8705NS is tailored for rapid, high-strength assemblies.

Implementation tips and safety precautions for the 45 ml Duo-Pak

The 45 ml Duo-Pak of the Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS consists of two separate cartridges: the acrylic resin and the hardener. Both components are automatically mixed in the supplied mixing nozzle.

Before any application, purge the cartridge slightly to homogenize the product and eliminate air bubbles. Never reuse a mixing nozzle that has already hardened.

Surface preparation: degrease thoroughly with a suitable solvent (isopropanol, acetone). Abrade if possible to increase the contact surface. Dry completely before bonding.

Apply the adhesive to one of the two surfaces, assemble immediately, and keep in position for the duration of the set time. The work time is approximately 4 to 5 minutes at 23 °C, work quickly.

Full mechanical strength is reached after 24 hours at room temperature. Moderate heating (60 °C, 30 min) can accelerate polymerization for demanding assemblies.

Precautions:

  • Work in a well-ventilated space: acrylic vapors are irritating.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety goggles.
  • Store the Duo-Pak away from heat, between 16 °C and 27 °C.
  • Reseal the cartridge with the used mixing nozzle between uses to limit exposure to air.
  • Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before first use.

FAQ - 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP8705NS Acrylic Adhesive, Black, 45 ml Duo-Pak

1. Which materials does the DP8705NS actually adhere to?

This structural acrylic adhesive is formulated to bond a wide range of substrates: metals, composites, plastics (ABS, polyester, polycarbonate), wood, and painted materials.

It excels especially on difficult surfaces like low surface energy plastics, which are often problematic with standard epoxies.

2. Do I need to prepare the surfaces before application?

Thorough degreasing with a suitable solvent is essential. On metals, light mechanical abrasion improves adhesion.

Unlike some epoxy adhesives, the DP8705NS is more tolerant of slightly damp or oily surfaces, but clean preparation always ensures the best mechanical performance.

3. What is the work time available after mixing?

The DP8705NS offers an open time of approximately 4 to 6 minutes at 23 °C. This is sufficient to position parts without rushing.

Handling strength is reached in 15 to 20 minutes. Complete polymerization occurs in 24 hours.

4. Does the black color have a functional impact?

The black tint is primarily an aesthetic advantage: the glue line blends discreetly into dark or black parts.

It does not affect the mechanical properties of the adhesive. The shear strength performance remains identical to the translucent version.

5. Is the 45 ml Duo-Pak format compatible with standard 3M guns?

Yes. The 45 ml Duo-Pak is used with the 3M™ EPX applicator gun, designed for 1:1 two-part cartridges.

Mixing is performed automatically via the supplied mixing nozzle. No manual dosage is required, which eliminates ratio errors and ensures consistent assembly quality.

6. In which sectors is the DP8705NS primarily used?

It is found in the automotive industry, recreational vehicle construction, electronics, and the manufacturing of composite panels.

At Dagobert Industrie, we particularly recommend it for structural assemblies where resistance to shock and vibration is critical.
